2 Kings 17

This week we will consider 2 Kings 17. In this chapter we see the last king of Israel (northern kingdom), Hoshea and the defeat and captivity of Israel. We have seen God's great mercy and patience to Israel but now the time of judgment has come.

The last king of Israel was Hoshea. In 2 Kings 15:30 he killed Pekah to become king. He reigned for 9 years. In the 6th year of King Hezekiah of Judah he was led away captive to Assyria (2 Kings 18:10-11). Also the prophet Hosea ended his ministry during the reign of Hoshea.

2 Kings 17:1-6 The reign of Hoshea

  1. How was he described differently than the other kings of Israel? (vs. 2)
  2. Describe God's last loving cry to Israel to return to Him and their response. (2 Chronicles 30)
  3. Why did the king of Assyria finally invade Israel? (vs. 3-5)
  4. Where were the people of Israel taken into captivity? (vs. 6)
    a. Note: not all were taken into captivity, some of the poor were left in Israel.
  5. How long was it since the northern kingdom was formed until its captivity?
  6. Find scriptures where the Lord said if they were disobedient they would be scattered and taken captive?
    a. i.e.: Deu 28:63-65; 29:25-28; Hosea 7:8-11; 8:8-10; 10:11-15

2 Kings 17:7-23 Why Israel fell and was taken captive

  1. Go through these verses and identify the many ways Israel displeased the Lord.
    a. Are there applications in our lives?
  2. Vs. 19 says Judah "walked in the customs which Israel introduced". Why weren't they taken captive at this point also?
  3. What did Jeroboam do to the people of Israel and how did they respond? (vs. 21-23)

2 Kings 17:24-41 Assyria fills Israel with foreigners

  1. Who did Assyria move to Israel and what happened to them at first? (vs. 24-27)
    a. Why would Assyria move these people to Israel?
    b. Who would these people eventually become when we see them in the New Testament? (John 4:19-24)
    c. What did the Jews think of them? (John 8:48)
  2. What was the king's solution to the lion problem?
    a. Who was this priest?
    b. Was he a priest of the Lord?
  3. What was the result of the priest's teaching?
  4. What is the tragic phrase that characterizes these people to this day? (vs. 33 & 41)
  5. Do we see this still going on in our time?

As we reflect back on the northern kingdom of Israel, what are some of the lessons we can learn about both man and the Lord?

2 Kings 13

We will be covering 2 Kings 13 this week. Even though Some of the rule of Israel's (not Judah's) king Joash (Jehoash) is covered in 2 Kings 14 it fits better with King Amaziah of Judah. Here are some questions to ponder as you read and study for Friday night. Like Mac shared last time, the questions we send are to help you dig into the chapter and help generate discussion not to be a limit or a rigid structure. What was common to all the kings of the Northern Kingdom of Israel? What was the state of Israel during the reign of King Jehoahaz ? How was Jehoahaz different than most kings of Israel? When and how was the prayer of Jehoahaz answered? What does the meeting between King Joash and Elisha tell you about the king? What does it tell you about Elisha? What does it tell you about God? How long was the ministry of Elisha? What was the fruit of it? ( The answers to #6 you have to dig for.) Why did Elisha put his hands on the hands of the king while he shot the arrows? Why was E

2 Kings 20

This week we will consider from 2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32:24-33 & Isaiah 38-39. Last time we considered Hezekiah's 1st test: The Assyrian invasion of Judah. This week we will consider the other 2 tests: His illness and the envoys from Babylon. As we saw last time 2 Kings 18-20 are not in chronological order. Our chapters this week, 2 Kings 20, et. al., occurred before Sennacherib's 2nd invasion in 2 Kings 18:17. Hezekiah's illness (2 Kings 20:1-11, 2 Chronicles 32:24-26 & Isaiah 38) What was the reason behind Hezekiah's illness? (2 Chronicles 32:24-26) What did Isaiah say to Hezekiah & what was Hezekiah's response? (2 Kings 20:1-3, Isaiah 38:1-3) a. What do you think of Hezekiah's response? What did the Lord speak to Isaiah about healing Hezekiah? (2 Kings 20:4-7, Isaiah 38:4-6 & 21) a. What are your thoughts on the Lord's response to Hezekiah? Why do you think Hezekiah asked for a sign? (2 Kings 20:8-11, Isaiah 38:22 & 7-8) a. What was
