2 Kings 15

We'll consider 2 Kings 15 for our Kings Bible Study where we see 5 kings of Israel. Also we'll consider the kings of Judah in 2 Chronicles 26: Azariah/Uzziah & chapter 27: Jotham.

The questions below will assist us in our preparation which will then allow us to spend more time in fellowship about the lessons and applications gleaned from these chapters.

In 2 Kings 15 we see the short accounts of 5 evil kings in Israel. Last time when we studied their predecessor, Jeroboam II, we saw where both Amos and Hosea prophesied judgment upon Israel unless there was repentance. Sadly as we consider these 5 kings we see no repentance and aspects of their prophecies being fulfilled.

1. What similarities and/or what unique events do you see occurring to these 5 kings during their reigns, their deaths, etc.?
    a. Zechariah: 2 Kings 15:8-12  (6 months) (see 2 K 10:30)
    b. Shallum: 2 Kings 15:13-15 (1 month)
    c. Menahem: 2 Kings 15:16-22 (10 years) (see Hosea 13:16)
    d. Pekahiah: 2 Kings 15:23-26 (2 years)
    e. Pekah: 2 Kings 15:27-31 (20 years) (we'll see him again in 2 K 16:5)
2. What lessons can we learn from the lives of these 5 kings
3. How do we see the Lord working during the reign of these 5 kings?

We now turn our attention to the southern kingdom of Judah and see King Azariah/Uzziah succeeding Amaziah in 2 Kings 15:1-7 and 2 Chronicles 26. His given name at birth was Azariah (Jehovah has helped) but when he became king he took the name Uzziah (Jehovah is strength). Again we see one who had a very good beginning, led Judah to prosper in many great ways, yet had a tragic ending.

Uzziah's Beginning (2 C 26:1-5; 2 K 14:21-22 & 15:1-7)
1. Why was the rebuilding of Elath significant? (2 C 26:2; 2 K 14:22)
2. How does Zechariah influence Uzziah and was it a lasting influence? (2 C 26:5)

Uzziah's prosperity (2 C 26:6-15)
1. Describe some of Uzziah's accomplishments.
2. What do you think it means in vs.15: "...he was marvelously helped until he was strong."?

Uzziah's pride and downfall (2 C 26:16-23; 2 K 15:5-7)
1. Describe Uzziah's prideful actions and the priests response. (2 C 26:16-18)
    a. How do we see the mercy of the Lord in these verses?
2. What happened to Uzziah when he refused to listen to the priests? (2 C 26:19-23)
    a. Compare these verses to the punishments of Miriam (Numbers 12:10) and Gehazi (2 Kings 5:27)

Isaiah prophesied during the reign of Uzziah in Isaiah 1-6
1. In a general sense, what does Isaiah 1-5, show us of Judah's spiritual condition?
2. How does Isaiah 4, show God's mercy and hope?
3. What impact did Uzziah's death have on Isaiah? (Isaiah 6:1-8)

Following God's judgment on Uzziah, his son Jotham reigned (2 C 25:21). The prophets Isaiah, Hosea and Micah served during his reign

1. What does it speak of Jotham's character when it says, "he did right in the sight of the Lord, in spite of the people continuing to act corruptly"? (2 C 27:2)
2. Describe some of Jotham's accomplishments. (2 C 27:3-5)
3. What does it mean that "Jotham become mighty because he ordered his ways before the Lord"? ( 2 C 27:6)

Kings and Prophets (charts, maps, timeline)

For our Friday Bible studies we're using a timeline for the kings that all can keep as well as a poster to refer to during our studies. Here are some pics from those as well as links to the place to buy them. (Link: Kings and Prophets Timeline) (Link: Kings and Prophets Poster)

2 Kings 13

We will be covering 2 Kings 13 this week. Even though Some of the rule of Israel's (not Judah's) king Joash (Jehoash) is covered in 2 Kings 14 it fits better with King Amaziah of Judah. Here are some questions to ponder as you read and study for Friday night. Like Mac shared last time, the questions we send are to help you dig into the chapter and help generate discussion not to be a limit or a rigid structure. What was common to all the kings of the Northern Kingdom of Israel? What was the state of Israel during the reign of King Jehoahaz ? How was Jehoahaz different than most kings of Israel? When and how was the prayer of Jehoahaz answered? What does the meeting between King Joash and Elisha tell you about the king? What does it tell you about Elisha? What does it tell you about God? How long was the ministry of Elisha? What was the fruit of it? ( The answers to #6 you have to dig for.) Why did Elisha put his hands on the hands of the king while he shot the arrows? Why was E

2 Kings 20

This week we will consider from 2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32:24-33 & Isaiah 38-39. Last time we considered Hezekiah's 1st test: The Assyrian invasion of Judah. This week we will consider the other 2 tests: His illness and the envoys from Babylon. As we saw last time 2 Kings 18-20 are not in chronological order. Our chapters this week, 2 Kings 20, et. al., occurred before Sennacherib's 2nd invasion in 2 Kings 18:17. Hezekiah's illness (2 Kings 20:1-11, 2 Chronicles 32:24-26 & Isaiah 38) What was the reason behind Hezekiah's illness? (2 Chronicles 32:24-26) What did Isaiah say to Hezekiah & what was Hezekiah's response? (2 Kings 20:1-3, Isaiah 38:1-3) a. What do you think of Hezekiah's response? What did the Lord speak to Isaiah about healing Hezekiah? (2 Kings 20:4-7, Isaiah 38:4-6 & 21) a. What are your thoughts on the Lord's response to Hezekiah? Why do you think Hezekiah asked for a sign? (2 Kings 20:8-11, Isaiah 38:22 & 7-8) a. What was
