2 Kings 1

We will consider 2 Kings 1.

Recommended reading: 1 Kings 22:51-2 Kings 1:18

Here are some questions to consider in preparation for our time together:

  1. 1 Kings 22:53 says about Ahaziah "...he provoked the Lord God of Israel to anger...". What were some of the ways the judgement of the Lord came upon Ahaziah (economically, politically, personally, etc.)?
  2. Who were the Moabites? When and who brought them into subjugation to Israel? Why were they rebelling now?
  3. What does it say of Ahaziah that he would seek Baaal-zebub after his severe accident? Why would he send his messengers to Ekron, which was in another county, Philistia?
  4. Describe the encounter between the messengers & Elijah? Why did they not complete their mission but return to Ahaziah?
  5. Why would Ahaziah know Elijah & the messengers would not know him? What does the hairy garment speak of? Compare the description of Elijah with that of John the Baptist.
  6. Describe the 3 encounters that Elijah had with the 51 soldiers sent by Ahaziah. What is the difference between the first two and the third one? Elaborate on what the third commander said that made the difference. Share your thoughts on the fire from heaven. Where else in Scripture do we see fire from heaven?
  7. In vs.16 we see Elijah standing boldly before the King of Israel. Share your thoughts on the contrast between this and his fleeing for his life in 1 Kings 19.
  8. Note is vs. 17 we see two Jehorams, one son of Ahab and one son of Jehoshaphat. (We'll see more of them later in 2 Kings)

2 Kings 20

This week we will consider from 2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32:24-33 & Isaiah 38-39. Last time we considered Hezekiah's 1st test: The Assyrian invasion of Judah. This week we will consider the other 2 tests: His illness and the envoys from Babylon. As we saw last time 2 Kings 18-20 are not in chronological order. Our chapters this week, 2 Kings 20, et. al., occurred before Sennacherib's 2nd invasion in 2 Kings 18:17. Hezekiah's illness (2 Kings 20:1-11, 2 Chronicles 32:24-26 & Isaiah 38) What was the reason behind Hezekiah's illness? (2 Chronicles 32:24-26) What did Isaiah say to Hezekiah & what was Hezekiah's response? (2 Kings 20:1-3, Isaiah 38:1-3) a. What do you think of Hezekiah's response? What did the Lord speak to Isaiah about healing Hezekiah? (2 Kings 20:4-7, Isaiah 38:4-6 & 21) a. What are your thoughts on the Lord's response to Hezekiah? Why do you think Hezekiah asked for a sign? (2 Kings 20:8-11, Isaiah 38:22 & 7-8) a. What was...

Also note that during this time the prophets Jeremiah & Ezekiel were active. NOTE: This will conclude our study of Kings. We will pause during the rest of July & August and start back the Bible Study in September. We will then study Ezra, Nehemiah, and the related prophecies of Haggai, Zechariah & Malachi. During our study we will also see how the Lord spoke to ones in exile though Daniel & Ezekiel, as well as in Esther. King Jehoahaz (2 Kings 23: 29-34 & 2 Chronicles 36:1-3) How long did he reign & what happened to him (Jer. 22:10-12)  Who was the actual ruler of Judah? King Jehoiakim (2 Kings 23:34-24:7 & 2 Chronicles 36:4-8) Who made him king, who changed his name & why was his and others name's changed?
